In blood-soaked Tudor England, Katherine Parr (Alicia Vikander), the sixth and final wife of King Henry VIII (Jude Law), is appointed regent while the tyrant Henry fights abroad. Katherine has done all she can to promote a new future based on her radical Protestant beliefs.

When the King returns, increasingly ill and delusional, he turns his anger on the extremists, accusing Catherine's childhood friend of treason and burning her at the stake. Horrified and grief-stricken, yet forced to deny it, Catherine finds herself fighting for survival.
