The Sedona Police Department will host a Golf Scramble in support of Special Olympics Arizona on Saturday, October 19th at the Oak Creek Country Club Golf Course. Tee time is 8:30 a.m. and the golf portion of the day is scheduled to end by 2 p.m.
“This is actually the first ever Special Olympics golf contest by the Sedona Police Department,” said Katherine Beers, an SPD police officer and event organizer. “We have held golf tournaments in the past, but it was with a different organization.”
Registration includes lunch, which includes burgers, bratwurst, chips, and salad.
“You can enjoy a day of golf on a beautiful golf course and support an organization that is incredibly beneficial to special people near and dear to us: people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.” Special Olympics Arizona Law Enforcement Torch Run Director Mike Barnett said. “Then we'll have lunch, and then we'll have a little banquet with raffles and an auction. So it should be a lot of fun.”
In the scramble format, players are divided into teams of four and each team hits the ball with each stroke. The team then selects the ball that best positions the next shot.
“Because of the format, the scores are usually very competitive,” Barnett said.
Participants can register for $150 as an individual or $600 as a group of four. Individual registrants will be grouped into teams of four on the day of the scramble. Proceeds will be donated to Special Olympics Arizona. Sponsorship options are still available, including a $1,000 event swag sponsorship and golf cart sponsorship, which includes a free foursome spot and advertising.
“As event merchandise sponsors, they will be recognized in print and at the post-contest luncheon,” SPD said in a press release. “As a golf cart sponsor, you will be recognized with player signatures on each golf cart and printed material provided in the swag bag.”
Players are also automatically eligible to participate in the hole-in-one competition. “We are finalizing the prizes,” Barnett said.
“We'd like to have a new golf cart as one of the prizes, and we'd also like to win another golf cart.'' “We're not at production capacity,'' Beals said. spoke. “I don't know if it's because it's an election year or not, but it's made it a little bit harder to get people to come out and play. So we're hoping to see a few more teams here.”
Donations are also being solicited for raffle items and swag bags, and all donations are tax deductible.
“I don't think there's anyone I know who doesn't have a family member or friend with this disease. [disabilities]'' Beers said. “I feel like it impacts everyone and Special Olympics, which I'm very passionate about. So I think this is something people should actively participate in.”
