SEEDS funding sets the stage for economic development in the Montgomery area

Alabama Grants $1.27 Million for Montgomery Development

The Alabama Department of Commerce recently awarded a $1.27 million seed grant to the Montgomery Regional Chamber of Commerce and the Montgomery Industrial Development Board (IDB).

This funding, part of the State Department of Industrial Development Site Assessment and Economic Development Strategy (SEEDS) program, will facilitate the purchase of the 111-acre Del Sol Property.

Strategically positioned along US Highway 31 with easy access to I-65, I-85, Montgomery Regional Airport, and the Intermodal Container Relocation Facility (ICTF), this site plays a crucial role in enhancing the region’s logistics and industrial growth.

“The Seeds Grant program aims to lay the groundwork for sustainable growth across Alabama, and today’s announcement embodies that vision,” stated Ellen McNair, the secretary of the Alabama Department of Commerce.

She added, “This investment in Montgomery is designed to foster innovation and expand opportunities, while also supporting local initiatives for a stronger, more inclusive economy. We’re excited to collaborate with a community that’s taking bold steps for its future.”

The Del Sol site is undergoing detailed assessments and is preparing for development. Officials expect it to attract significant industrial and distribution projects that will enhance competitiveness in Montgomery and the surrounding area.

Anna Buckalew from the Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce remarked, “This investment signifies a robust endorsement of Montgomery’s strategy for regional growth.”

She noted the cooperation between the Department of Commerce, IDB, and public-private partners to enhance site competitiveness and business growth opportunities in the region.

Buckalew mentioned that the Seeds Award is indicative of careful preparation and strategic planning that has ready-made the Del Sol Property for development.

The Chamber’s economic development team has proactively ensured that utility, access, and environmental evaluations were completed in partnership with IDB, so Montgomery would be well-prepared for new possibilities.

According to Buckalew, this funding bolsters Montgomery’s reputation and solidifies its momentum as a prime destination for industry.

The grant demonstrates progress in enhancing the region’s ability to compete for influential projects, respond to opportunities, broaden its workforce, and provide lasting economic advantages.

Governor Ivey’s “Game Plan,” which addresses the immediate need for high-quality industrial sites, emphasizes Alabama’s commitment to economic development, especially as other states ramp up similar initiatives.

The first SEEDS funding round, which totaled $30.1 million, came along with local investments amounting to $308.4 million across 29 sites.

The second round of grants, including Montgomery’s, totaled $23.5 million and was matched by over $17 million in local investments.
