Sen. Jack Williams declares his run for Commissioner of Agriculture and Industries in Alabama

Sen. Jack Williams Enters Alabama Agricultural Commissioner Race

State Senator Jack Williams has officially joined the 2026 race for Alabama’s Agricultural and Industrial Commissioner. A Republican and a fourth-generation farmer from South Alabama, Williams emphasizes his farming background and legislative experience as key points in his campaign.

“I’m really concerned about the state of agribusiness in Alabama,” Williams expressed. “When I look around, I can’t help but wonder who will be growing crops and raising cattle a decade from now. The average age of farmers in our state is around 60, and many of them face tough seasons, which is quite alarming.”

Williams, who currently represents Senate District 34, aims his campaign at preserving Alabama’s agricultural heritage and ensuring food security. He strongly supports former President Donald Trump’s trade policies, particularly the tariffs on foreign agricultural imports.

“The president is heading in the right direction by implementing these agricultural tariffs,” he said. “Imports like beef and crops from countries with low labor costs are putting American farmers at a disadvantage. Sure, foreign goods might be cheaper for shoppers, but lower prices don’t always equate to better quality.”

Seeking to reflect on his tenure, Williams remarked, “Representing Senate District 34 has been a lifelong honor. I’ve picked up a lot of insights on how to navigate politics, but I feel there’s still much to achieve. If elected as Agriculture Commissioner, I plan to build on our past successes and collaborate with the Trump administration to bolster Alabama’s agricultural sector.”

First elected to the Alabama Legislature in 2014, Williams currently serves as vice-president of the Senate Agriculture Committee. Throughout his career, he has sponsored numerous agriculture-related laws, including a notable 2024 measure that bans the sale of lab-grown meat in Alabama. He has also focused on advancing healthcare options for farmers and supporting tax incentives, like eliminating sales tax on fencing materials to aid farming operations.

In addition to his legislative work, Williams and his wife, Bobby, created a thriving farm and nursery business, starting Twin Oaks Nursery, Inc. in Wilmer back in 1986. In 2004, they acquired Tom Dodd Nursery in Sems. Since then, their operation has grown into the largest nursery in Alabama and one of the biggest in the nation.

Today, his son John manages the nursery’s daily operations, while his grandson Mica oversees the family’s cattle and hay farming.

Williams emphasized the importance of the Agricultural Industry Commissioner role, stating, “This is one of the most crucial positions in our state. This department supervises our food supply, advocates for farmers, and protects consumers. We really can’t afford to lose any more time.”

Williams is aiming to succeed current Commissioner Rick Patty, who is term-limited.
