Sen. Kyrsten Sinema says she has no interest in becoming a Republican

Senator Kirsten Cinema will face challenges from both the right and the left if she runs for re-election in 2024. But that threat hasn’t yet pushed the Democratic-turned-independent into Republican hands.

In a pre-recorded interview for CBS’s “Face the Nation” on Sunday, she said the movie was “absolutely” done with political parties and would never join the Republican Party.

“Since you’ve become an independent, you’re never going to be a Republican,” asked host Margaret Brennan.

“No,” Cinema said, adding, “You don’t move from one broken party to another.”

Cinema, who left the Democratic Party in December 2022, has not said whether he intends to run for re-election in 2024.

“I’m not here today to talk about the election,” she said Sunday when asked about her plans.

If she does run, Cinema will face challenges from at least Democratic Rep. Ruben Gallego and Republican Pinal County Sheriff Mark Lamb. But senators have used the transition to party to call and put an end to a partisan surge in Congress.

“I think what I’ve tried to do with the U.S. Senate is the right thing to do is show that we have differences and we have differences that should be celebrated,” Cinema said Sunday. “It’s an important part of democracy. But those differences shouldn’t prevent us from getting things done.”
