Sen. Katie Britt Discusses I-65 Expansion with Transportation Secretary
During a budget hearing in Washington on Thursday, U.S. Senator Katie Britt engaged with U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy to address various topics, including the proposed expansion of I-65. This highway stretches 887 miles from Kentucky through Alabama down to the Gulf Coast.
Britt informed Duffy that the expansion initiative has already received endorsement from former President Donald Trump.
“When we discussed that significant transportation project, President Trump made it a top priority. He’s publicly expressed that I-65 needs to be expanded,” Britt, a Republican from Montgomery, stated. “He wants it to be a four-lane road on both sides and is committed to making that vision a reality.”
She highlighted the necessity of widening roads in Alabama. “I understand how crucial this is for our state,” Britt remarked. “Travelers heading to Alabama often find themselves stuck on I-65. Many people who wish to visit Alabama’s stunning white sand beaches during spring and summer, or even those heading to the Florida Panhandle, are all great folks.”
Britt inquired if Duffy would be open to seriously considering the project. “I would like your commitment to monitor its progress,” she suggested. “A project of this scale requires a federal partnership. It’s essential that you confirm President Trump’s commitments and explore ways to realize them.”
Duffy responded affirmatively, saying, “The president’s priorities align with my own, so yes, let’s take a close look at this.”
Britt’s advocacy for the I-65 expansion has also received backing from Lieutenant Colonel Will Ainsworth, a long-time supporter of the initiative.
Ainsworth expressed support on social media, encouraging Britt and using the hashtag #gowide65.
