Lady Raiders Basketball Dominate Westwood Thursday To Move To Open Division Rankings

YUMA, Arizona (KYMA, KECY) – On Thursday, the Arizona Interscholastic Association released its mid-season rankings for winter sports highlighting several teams in Yuma County.

Three teams made it into the top 10 of their respective conferences, while others held their own positions with clear shots.

One of the teams leading the conversation was the Cibola Lady Raiders after taking the 33rd spot statewide. Just 1st place left from the Open Division. year-end title.

While one of the best 6A schools, this ranking may have prompted the Lady Raiders to make a statement. The Raiders were scheduled to host Westwood on Thursday night — the team ranked 15th in the state rankings.

At the end of the night, the Raiders delivered a performance that could have changed the AIA rankings.

At the end of the first quarter, Cibola led 19-0 with Sierra Bonhauer on 20 points and Isabella Molina and Lori Hoffmeyer on 13 points each to win 61-34.

By Friday morning, the Lady Raiders hit the ‘open division’ as the 28th-ranked team in the state while moving up to 12th in 6A.

Staying in the women’s hoop, the Yuma Catholic Lady Shamrocks were marked as the 3rd overall team in 3A. His big win over the ALA West Foothills on Friday night saw the Rocks improve to his 15-3 record.

The Shamrock men’s basketball team also finished sixth in the 3A Top 10 with a 16-2 record after Friday night’s victory.

On the soccer pitch, the San Luis Sidewinders Boys soccer team continues to dominate everyone with eight wins and a 50-4 lead over their opponents. They are currently the third-best team in all of 6A and are chasing the state title after falling just short last season.

Finally, the Gila Ridge Lady Hawks football team suffered their first loss on Tuesday after going 6-0 down to Pinnacle. The Ladyhawks are currently in 11th place, just outside the top 10.
