Silver Belt | Man involved in August standoff receives 15-year sentence

A Globe man involved in a clash with law enforcement in August 2022 was sentenced to 15 years in prison last week after reaching a plea bargain agreement.

A December 19 plea bargain provided for Michael Wayne Norris, 52, to serve 15 years in prison at the Arizona Department of Corrections for aggravated assault/use of simulated weapons. Gila County Superior Court Judge Brian Chambers delivered the verdict last Tuesday, December 27.

The warrant was served by the Gila County Sheriff’s Deputy, Gila County Narcotics, Gang and Violent Crimes Task Force detectives, and Grove Police Department officers.According to a subsequent Gila County sheriff,PhilAccording to a press release, Norris confronted officers with guns as they entered and barricaded them inside.

Before announcing the verdict, Judge Chambers cited aggravating factors, including Norris’ behavior in “maliciousness toward the victim” on behalf of his position in law enforcement and multiple victims. Two police officers involved in the incident were present at the sentencing but did not address the court.

Norris pleaded guilty to two counts in an earlier lawsuit filed in late June 2020, according to Azcourts.gov. Possession of narcotics for sale and fraud involving weapons/prohibited possessors. He was sentenced to 10 years for drugs and 5 years for weapons charges. The three sentences are served simultaneously, minus the time served.
