Grove Mayor Al Gameros

Washington DC trip

For the first time in Globe City Council history, members of the Globe City Council attended the 2023 National League of Cities Conference March 25-29 in Washington, DC. Jesse Leatham and Mariano Gonzalez. Also present at the conference were Mayor Paul Jepson and Economics Director Linda O’Donnett. This year’s conference provided key information and procedures for accessing the multi-million dollar infrastructure funding available.

Coordinated by City of Washington lobbyists, private meetings were arranged on the final day with Senators Cinema, Senator Kerry, Rep. Crane, Rep. Stanton, Rep. Gallegos, the Army Corps of Engineers, and the USDA.During these meetings, we were able to make personal presentations.station We are working on seven pending city projects that require millions of dollars to complete. MPs were very appreciative of these presentations as they moved forward towards finalizing the budget. I would like to thank the wonderful staff who prepared the documents used in the presentation.

future water security

At the request of the City Council, staff made presentations on the city’s water history, supply and infrastructure, and recommendations for future water supply security. The presentation included a breakdown of all city wells and gallons used daily and annually. Information was also presented on the storage capacity in the city and the distance of the water supply within the system. It was worrying to hear about the amount of water loss in the system each year due to leaks, cutoffs, and evaporation. The purpose of the presentation is to initiate discussion and planning to address future water loss and conservation. For the future of the city, there are many ideas that can be realized by everyone in the city. These discussions are accelerating plans for limited growth in our cities, so they need to start now.

library outdoor space

At its March 14 meeting, the council approved a contract for Rodriguez Construction and the Library Outdoor Space Renovation Project. The project is scheduled to start in May. The total cost of completion for this project is $44,760. The grant awarded covers his $21,400 of this amount, and the city contributes his $23,360. This project encompasses the outdoor space north of the library, but does not include any tent upgrades.

Globe brand new city

The council approved the new City of Globe brand presented by staff and Local First. It’s time for a new and refreshed brand to replace the Arizona to the Core city brand approved in 2018. Tell, is a much simpler rendering. It also features GLOBE in large letters on the centerpiece and the date it was founded to mark its history. This process was made possible by funding from Local First Arizona and included public meetings for input from the community. Refreshing your brand with the times is always a good idea.

FEMA remapping

FEMA President Michael Bishop gave a presentation to the Council regarding the Grove and Gila County-wide Floodplain Remapping Project. This project will verify if the current mapping flood plan is correct or needs adjustment. Projects have different phases and can take up to four years to complete. The process included 815 miles of land, 16 miles of streams, 64 structures analyzed, and a hydrological review of water. Phase 1 is expected to be completed in February 2025.

Cottonwood Bridge Project

The City of Grove has been notified that it has been awarded a $2,822,565 grant from the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) to replace the Cottonwood Bridge. The awarded funds are part of federal funds allocated to the state of Arizona for special infrastructure projects. This bridge was another bridge identified during the inspection as in need of replacement. I would like to thank the staff for their hard work and persistence in securing these funds.

Community Center pool update

On April 21, City Council and staff toured the pool, which is now filled with water, to see the current state of completion. I was pleasantly surprised by the overall size and layout of the pool and recreational facilities. A premier facility that the entire Globe-Miami community will enjoy and be proud of. It is a place of recreation and events for all ages and a great swimming arena. We have several projects that need to be completed before opening. These include chlorination systems, fencing, concrete work, and interior completion of shower and bathroom entrances. Contractor Structural is pushing for a completion date around late May. Once the interior shower/bathroom building is completed, it will be open soon.

Collecting poppy seed pods

In our community, the poppy flowers have bloomed beautifully this year and many tourists have visited the area. We want to catch as many dry pods as possible at the right time, bag them, and spread them further throughout the community for the next year. This varies from year to year based on the time of recent rains and the hardiness of the plant. This critical period he may occur in late May. Together, we can recapture the pods, expand them further, and make next year even better. We ask that all organizations along this highway, including ADOT, City of Globe, Freeport McMoRan, Allegiant, Trash Mob, and Families with Adopt a Mile, work together to accomplish this task.
