Some things change, some things stay the same. The same applies to some of Grand Canyon State’s smallest towns. One fascinating place where time seems to stand still is the historic small town of Chloride, Arizona. Once a mining town, not much has changed since its founding.
The small town of Chloride is a former mining community in Mojave County. It is now considered “the oldest continuously inhabited mining town in Arizona”. It is also called a “living ghost town”.
Chloride was first established as a silver mining camp in 1862. At its height he had more than 75 mines and in town he had 2,000 people.
Of course, like many other mining cities, eventually resources ran out, the mines closed, people left, and Chloride became a veritable ghost town. About 400 people currently live in Chloride.
If you want to visit Chloride (highly recommended), you’ll feel like you’ve traveled back in time to the 1800s. Start by stopping by the Arizona Tourist Information Center on Tennessee Avenue to pick up maps, brochures, and ask questions before exploring.
Please choose a souvenir when you travel!
One of the town’s must-sees is the Chloride Cemetery. You can walk around here and see tombstones that date back to the early 1900s.
Whether you need a quick bite, a place to spend the night, or both, Yesterday’s Restaurant and Shep Miner’s Inn are another must-see in town. The restaurant menu is rich in classic American fare, and the inn is charming and quirky. Experience it here at Chloride.
A more modern landmark in the town of Chloride is the mural by Roy Purcell. The colorful murals on the 600-meter-high rocks of the Cherubat Mountains are worth seeing.
