Somerton — The YUHSD Board has accepted a donation of $21,879.25 from Somerton Education, Inc. at its February 8, 2023 monthly meeting.
The funds will be used to purchase exercise equipment for Summerton High School, which is scheduled to open in the fall. SHS Principal Lucky Alviso was present at the meeting to accept donations.
“We are excited to work with Arvizo and have him as principal of Somerton High School,” said Somerton Education, Inc. Treasurer Lorena Delgadillo. “We would like to make our first major donation to the Yuma Union High School District. We have agreed to work with Mr. Arvizo to provide soccer equipment, but this is not the end. We would like to thank the community and the community of Yuma County for their commitment and constant support of our vision.”
The School Board raised funds through individual donations and fundraisers, including hosting the annual Corn Festival on Main Street in Somerton.
Construction of Summerton High School will begin in November 2021 and is expected to be completed in June 2023. The first freshman class will set foot on campus on August 3, 2023.
“The opening of the school continues to be highly anticipated,” said Arvizo. “Also, great support continues. The Somerton Education, Inc. committee has been instrumental in raising extracurricular and athletics funding and sponsorships for future Toros, future students.”
