Sonja Smith’s bid for Birmingham City Council gains momentum ahead of the runoff.

Support Grows for Sonja Smith Ahead of Election

With just one day remaining until the October 7th election, Sonja Smith’s campaign for Birmingham City Council District 8 is showing remarkable growth. The campaign has gained fresh support, strong financial backing, and a lively grassroots movement, having already knocked on over 4,000 doors in the district.

Smith is widely acknowledged by nearly all key elected officials in the 8th district. This includes Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin, State Assembly members Kelvin Dutcher and Travis Hendrix, as well as Jefferson County Commissioner Sheila Tyson. While Woodfin and Tyson had expressed their support before the recent leak, Dutcher and Hendrix joined in more recently.

Mayor Woodfin stated, “Sonja has shown that we can create a coalition and achieve results. Her leadership on the school board and vision for the 8th District will push Birmingham ahead.”

Various workers and community organizations are also rallying behind Smith. Prior to the leak, she had garnered support from groups like CWA Local 3902, Liuna Local 559, and the Jefferson County Progressive Democratic Council, Inc.

The increase in support is matched by a surge in grassroots activity. According to the most recent campaign finance filing, Smith has raised $27,473 since the leak and has actively engaged with voters about their neighborhood’s future.

“I am incredibly grateful for the trust placed in me by these leaders, organizations, and neighbors,” Smith remarked. “This momentum truly reflects the spirit of District 8 to invest in our youth, empower our community, and champion small businesses. Together, we’re shaping a stronger Birmingham.”

The leak elections for District 8 are scheduled for tomorrow, Tuesday, October 7th.
