South Carolina Man Killed By Exploding Firework Mounted On His Head

A South Carolina man was killed Thursday when an overhead firework exploded, according to the New York Post.

The father, 41-year-old Allen Ray McGrew, was fatally injured when a firework exploded on his head. according to McGrew, who was reportedly trying to entertain neighbors by setting off fireworks at a local block party, died instantly from head injuries sustained in the accident, according to the New York Post.

The incident happened at about 10:30 p.m. after McGrew lit a large firework and placed it on top of the stars and stripes top hat he was wearing as part of his Uncle Sam costume to “show off.” Reports From WCBD: Despite pleas from the family for him to stop, the fireworks exploded before hitting the ground. According to the New York Post, the victim's wife, Paige McGrew, said she initially thought her husband was just posing with the fireworks.

“He had a firework on his top hat,” his wife told the New York Post. “I thought he was just showing off before he put it on the ground. I didn't realize it was already lit.”

Page also said the deceased had been drinking alcohol in the hours before the crash, which may have impaired his judgment, the New York Post reported. McGrew, described as a patriot who loved the Fourth of July, was not only celebrating the holiday, but also his son, who had recently become engaged, and was looking forward to welcoming his new wife into the family.
