The South Korean family, who traveled southwest and was expected to depart from the California airport this week, are missing, authorities say.
Ji-young Lee, 33, Tae-hee Kim, 59, and Jungi Kim, 54, He disappeared on March 13th while driving from the Grand Canyon towards Las Vegas. John Paxton, a spokesman for the Arizona Coconino County Sheriff’s Office, indicated that GPS information on the 2024 BMW they were driving was the last on westbound Interstate 40 in Williams, Arizona, before 3:30pm.
Paxton said their cars are about a mile away from a fatal chain reaction collision on a snowy and ice-covered highway, which includes 22 vehicles. Authorities say two people were killed, 16 people were injured and traffic was neglected along the highway.
Authorities are still working to identify all the vehicles involved in that crash.
“The fires from that accident were burning so hot that many of those cars are unidentified,” Paxton said.
Investigators checked local hospitals for their families but did not find them. Deputies also searched both sides of the highway by foot, air and car, looking for signs of the highway and BMW. But there were no traces of them, Paxton said.
The family traveled the area during a winter storm that caused heavy snow and whiteout conditions to northern Arizona.
“The weather conditions at the time were pretty bad,” Paxton said. “And most of the time, if you rerout, you’ll be rerouted from the interstate here in northern Arizona and become a dirt road. We checked all the roads, but since the 13th I’ve not had any pings from the phone or car.”
Arizona authorities were contacted by the South Korean consulate after the family missed a flight from San Francisco on Monday.
The BMW they drove had a California license plate 9khn768. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office (928) 774-4523.
