Southern Arizona Sports, Film and Tourism Authority seeks input on Graham, Greenlee needs, wants

TUCSON — The Southern Arizona Sports, Film and Tourism Authority is wasting no time making an impact in its service area.

At its first meeting on January 12, the Authority Board approved a $50,000 sponsorship of the Arizona Bowl, the college football bowl game held in Tucson each December.

The agency is now seeking suggestions on what could be done in five of the six counties that make up the agency: Cochise, Graham, Greenlee, Pinal and Santa Cruz.

“First, we have to build a very strong foundation,” said Blake Eager, the agency’s executive director. “So for me,[it’s]really solidifying what the counties are already doing: supporting markets, promoting them (and) cross-promoting them.

The Board of Authorities consists of one member from each county, one member from each of the three Native American tribes in the six counties, one member representing the local film industry, one member from tourism, one member from sports, and a final member from the economy. consists of experts in development.

Members were appointed either by the Governor, Speaker of the House, or Speaker of the Senate. The Graham County board representative is Lee Patterson, appointed by former chair Rusty Bowers.

The next meeting of the Board of Authorities is in February. The location has not yet been announced. The March meeting will be held in Graham County.
