Mobile, Alabama has been the South's most popular holiday celebration destination for over 300 years.

From King Cake and MoonPies to participating in “The Big Parade.” something for everyone During Azalea City's historic Mardi Gras celebration.

Cartridge Blackwell, curator of the Mobile Carnival Museum, said: southern living Magazine about Mardi Gras on mobile.

“Carnival is our greatest living tradition,” Blackwell said. “Most cities in the South have three seasons: summer, hunting, and football. But in Mobile and New Orleans, it's Carnival season. Here it's on the calendar from November until Ash Wednesday morning. But it never really stops.”

During “Carnival Season,” Mobile receives approximately 1 million visitors and revelers.

The Big Parade is always the big draw during Mardi Gras, but more specifically, it's the intricate and detailed floats that take part in the event that are the stars of the show.

Longtime float designer Mark Calametti explained his thought process when creating one of Mobile's famous floats.

“It's amazing to be a part of something that I grew up with and has such a rich history. I don't know how to express it, but at the end of the day, if it wasn't for you… [in person], you missed it,'' Calametti told Southern Living. “The float disappears and becomes something else, but that's also the beautiful thing about it. There is permanence in impermanence.”

“The fact that they are not cherished or preserved, but simply enjoyed in the moment, is what makes them special.”

According to a study commissioned by the Mobile Bay Convention & Visitors Bureau, Mardi Gras $408 million annual economic impact Carnival season creates more than 12,800 jobs in both Mobile and Baldwin counties.
