Spiro Cheriogotis Set to be Next Mayor of Mobile, Alabama
Spiro Cheriogotis is poised to become the next mayor of Mobile, Alabama, following a close election that saw him narrowly defeat former district judge Barbara Drummond. Unofficial results from Tuesday’s election indicate Cheriogotis garnered 51.4% of the votes, totaling 24,949 compared to Drummond’s 23,596.
Interestingly, Cheriogotis had finished second to Drummond in the general election back on August 26.
Following his victory, Cheriogotis celebrated with supporters during an election watch party, expressing gratitude to his campaign team and volunteers. He acknowledged the hard work of everyone involved, saying, “Internationals, field coordinators, steering committees, finance committees, prayer teams… hundreds of volunteers on the streets made this victory happen. Thank you. This isn’t just my win; it’s a team effort.”
He also committed to continuing the legacy of retiring Mobile Mayor Sande Timson.
Cheriogotis’ campaign benefited significantly from substantial donations from businesses and political action committees. In contrast, Drummond relied on historic grassroots support and endorsements from prominent Democratic figures at various levels.
Before the official results are finalized, provisional votes must be tallied. Reports have surfaced about technical issues at several polling locations, where some voters were mistakenly marked as “inactive” by electronic systems.
If the results hold, Cheriogotis will take office on November 3, 2025, becoming the 109th mayor of Mobile.
