Staci Brown Brooks: Serving to shape Alabama’s future – 2025 Women of Impact

Staci Brown Brooks often reflects on her career and the recurring theme is service—service to her community, her state, and various organizations she leads.

Her journey through journalism and corporate leadership showcases a career driven by purpose, collaboration, and a strong dedication to giving back.

Currently, as Vice President of Charitable Giving at Alabama Electric Power Company and president of the Alabama Power Foundation, Brooks is instrumental in shaping Alabama’s future by managing charitable investments, supporting nonprofits, and inspiring volunteerism across the state.

“It’s a great honor to lead this work in a state I love,” she shared.

“The Alabama Electric Power Foundation takes our role as a corporate citizen very seriously. For almost 36 years, we’ve contributed nearly $300 million to nonprofits, teachers and students, clinics, and programs for veterans.”

From journalism to corporate leadership

Brooks’ career path hasn’t been typical of someone in corporate leadership.

After graduating from the University of Alabama with a degree in journalism, she started her career as a copy editor at the Detroit Free Press.

She later returned home to work at the Tuscaloosa News and then the Birmingham News, rising through the ranks to become a staff writer, editor, and eventually director of interactive content.

“I’ve had the chance to explore various roles, and I see how each has contributed to my journey,” Brooks recalled.

“I started as a journalist in Detroit, then returned home and worked at the Tuscaloosa News and later at Birmingham News/al.com. After obtaining my MBA, I began to wonder if my skills were suited for the corporate world.”

That curiosity led her to Alabama Power, where she spent almost ten years in roles beyond public relations, including marketing communications, digital strategy, and business development.

Each role, she explained, equipped her for the company’s philanthropic efforts and leadership in its foundations.

The impact of charity and volunteer work

As president of the Alabama Electric Power Foundation and executive director of the Alabama Business Charit (ABC) Trust Fund, Brooks oversees programs that reach every corner of Alabama.

Though the foundation’s grants total almost $300 million historically, the ABC Trust has invested $40 million to assist low-income households with their essential energy and living expenses.

Her influence extends beyond financial contributions; she fosters a culture of service within Alabama Power, emphasizing how employees and retirees dedicate time to local nonprofits.

“Alabama Power employees and retirees contribute thousands of service hours each year across the state, supporting gardens, food banks, and other local organizations,” Brooks said.

Inspired by a strong woman and a fearless girl

Brooks attributes much of her inspiration to the women in her family and community.

“She dedicated over 40 years as a nurse and nurse educator in Dallas County. In her final years, she focused on ministry, helping women understand the risks of breast cancer and the importance of early detection. I think of her every day.”

Her daughter, just seven years old, teaches Brooks daily lessons in courage and authenticity.

“My daughter is bold and fearless in a way I never was. She’s a great example,” Brooks said. “The future is bright with her and her friends.”

She also praises her grandmother, sisters, aunts, friends, teachers, and colleagues, stating, “Alabama is nurturing a generation of strong women.”

While she values the wisdom of these women, Brooks acknowledges her husband as a key supporter.

“Though this event focuses on women, I have to recognize the men who have encouraged my growth and ambition, starting with my husband, Gerald Brooks Jr.,” she said.

Character leadership

Brooks defines leadership not by title but by integrity and compassion.

“Care for others more than for yourself. Be trustworthy—always follow through on your promises. You’ll know what you know and what you don’t,” she explained. “None of these qualities depend on position; they reflect who you are.”

This philosophy has earned her respect not just in Alabama’s corporate landscape, but in civic and nonprofit circles as well. Brooks serves on various boards, including Balkan Parks and Museums, Lawson State Community College Foundation, the Four Little Girls Memorial Fund, and YWCA Central Alabama. She is also an active member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.

Besides that, she supports initiatives like Bronze Valley, an organization promoting diverse, founder-led high-tech startups in Birmingham.

Celebrating Alabama’s roots

A proud native of Selma, Brooks remains connected to her roots. She attends the Baptist Church on Sixth Avenue and lives in the Birmingham area with her husband and daughter.

Her alma mater, the University of Alabama, honored her as a distinguished alum, and she has completed leadership programs at both Columbia Business School and Harvard University. She was also selected for Leadership Birmingham.

Life and impact of service

Looking back, Brooks considers one of her proudest accomplishments to be the chance to serve her state.

“I’m genuinely proud to support my hometown through nonprofit collaborations and volunteer efforts,” she said.

This pride shines through in her various roles, whether mentoring young professionals, strengthening Alabama’s nonprofit sector, or leading a corporate foundation recognized as one of the most influential charitable organizations in the state.

A remarkable woman

Staci Brown Brooks exemplifies what it means to be a remarkable woman.

Her leadership has opened doors for communities and organizations in Alabama. Her personal journey is a testament to resilience and service, as she shapes a better future for the state she calls home.

Brooks’ transition from journalism to corporate leadership reflects not just versatility but also a deep commitment to uplifting others.

She stands as an example of integrity, collaboration, and impact, continuing to guide Alabama Power’s charitable endeavors while promoting service across the state.
