State dreams on the line at regional – Yuma Pioneer

The state dream is on the men’s wrestling team at Yuma High School this weekend.
Teams will compete in Class 2A Region 1 tournaments on Fridays and Saturdays at the Bank of Colorado Event Center on the NJC campus in Sterling.

Head coach Kyle Newton and staff are expected to bring eight grapplers to the region. At least five of Wells’s said they expected to be among the top five seeds in their respective divisions.
Seeds won’t be known until Thursday, as coaches enter specific data about each wrestler into trackwrestling.com on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. It’s not the old days when coaches got together on regional Mondays to hash out the seed.
“What it really comes down to is a one-to-one standard,” Newton said.
Region 1 includes Ray, Dolores Huerta, Wiggins, Byers, Akron, Burlington, Clear Creek, Dayspring Christian, Gilpin County, Holyoke, Limon, Loveland Classical, Lyons, Merino, Sedgwick County/Fleming, Stratton There are 17 schools.
“It seems like in our area, it’s usually pretty stacked,” Newton said.
The top four in each division will qualify for the Class 2A State Tournament next week at Denver’s Ball Arena.
