PHOENIX — Mojave County is one step closer to receiving $10 million to improve Mojave County Sheriff’s Office substations across the county.
Arizona House Majority Leader Leo Biacicucci (Republican 30th)’s bill was passed 5-1 at a Senate Transportation Infrastructure Committee hearing on Monday, March 27.
The bill transferred $10 million from the General Fund to the Arizona State Department of Administration and the county for improvements to the Lake Havasu City Substation. Lake Havasu City Boat Safety Center, Mojave Valley and Beaver Dam Substations.
The measure would exempt budget allocations from expiring unless they were achieved or abandoned, or the funds were not used for the entire fiscal year.
Mojave County Sheriff Doug Schuster testified before a House committee that the department needed help with repairs and maintenance. Besides paying to use the Lake Havasu City water safety center, state agencies pay rent to place themselves at the substation, Schuster said. not.
“These stations are located around Mojave County and are accessed by many agencies outside of Mojave County,” Schuster said.
Schuster said maintenance at the facility has been long overdue, citing a lack of plumbing and an infestation of pests.
Co-host Rep. John Gillette (R-Kingman) previously asked whether potential liability would cost more than $10 million if an inmate fell ill with an infectious disease. Schuster replied in the affirmative.
