(Center Square) – Arizona Congressman Matt Gress has questioned the City of Scottsdale’s decision to shelter homeless and immigrants in upmarket hotels.
“The City of Scottsdale’s plans raise many questions as well as concerns,” Gress said in a press release Thursday. “While we can agree on the importance of tackling homelessness, it requires a transparent and well-publicized plan, and this fails on both counts. Scottsdale residents and Business owners should be provided with clear and complete details of the long-term intentions of the arrangements and plans approved by city leaders.”
he wrote in his book letter He said he was concerned about the effectiveness of using hotel rooms as emergency shelters and why Scottsdale would require homeless people from Phoenix to be housed. In addition, Mr. Gress asked whether there was any communication between the city and the McCormick Ranch Homeowners Association. The McCormick Ranch Homeowners Association is the area most likely to be affected by any change.
Asked for comment, the city sent Center Square a press release in which Ortega praised the state government’s subsidy.
“Scottsdale is grateful to be a grantee of the Homeless Shelter and Services Fund,” Ortega said in a release. “This award reinforces our commitment to providing homeless people and single-parent families with access to healthy, safe and decent temporary housing and support services.”
Maricopa County’s homelessness crisis has received national attention, especially following the recent removal of “The Zone,” a large homeless encampment in downtown Phoenix.According to his 2023 “as of” Maricopa Government Association countPhoenix has more than 3,000 homeless people without shelter, compared to just 64 in Scottsdale.
