STEPHEN MOORE: The Real Story Of The Two Americas

For the past 30 years or so, the left has concocted a narrative that there are two Americas. The ultra-wealthy group (the 1 percent) who have prospered over the past few decades have become even poorer, while everyone else has become even poorer. This is a fairy tale story, as nearly all Americans have experienced economic progress. Median household income, adjusted for inflation, has increased by more than 40% since 1984.

Prosperity is not a zero-sum game of “us versus them.” A rising tide truly lifts all boats.

But today, there are actually two Americas. First, there are the cultured, overeducated snobs. He religiously reads the New York Times, drives an electric car, and wears Harvard and Yale sweaters, but he has never even heard of NASCAR, eaten at Popeye's, or driven a John Deere tractor. These are people I've never met before. . (Related: Stephen Moore: New banking regulations will hurt small businesses and middle-class borrowers the most)

And it's just normal Main Street America. Snobs criticize unsophisticated, working-class Americans en masse. Elites believe that they are intellectually, culturally, and morally superior to the working class and rural America. There won't be many elites at the 30,000-person Trump rally.

The group I helped found, the Committee to Unleash Prosperity, recently announced that The study titled “Them Vs.” we” How America's cultural elite (defined as those with at least a graduate degree, an annual income of $150,000 or more, living in high-density urban areas, and attending Ivy League schools) interact with ordinary Americans. We are investigating whether there is a hopeless disconnect. Pollster Scott Rasmussen conducted the survey.

Here are some of the key surprising facts from the survey.

  • Economic well-being: Nearly three-quarters of elites surveyed believe they are better off financially now than when Joe Biden entered the White House. Less than 20% of general Americans feel the same way.
  • Personal freedom: Elites are three times more likely than all Americans to say this country has too much personal freedom. Surprisingly, nearly half of elites and nearly six in 10 Ivy Leaguers say they have too much freedom.
  • Climate change: An astonishing 72% of elites (including 81% of elites who graduated from top universities) support banning gasoline cars. And the majority of elites will ban gas stoves, non-essential air travel, SUVs, and private air conditioning. This means that you are not allowed to fly to Disney World with your children.
  • Education: Most elites believe that teachers' unions and school administrators should control school agendas. Most mainstream Americans believe that parents should make these decisions.

Oh, and about three-quarters of these cultural elites are Biden supporters. surprised?

There is a gulf the size of the Grand Canyon between America's elite and ordinary Americans, making it seem like they live in two different countries. Silicon Valley, Manhattan, and Washington DC have become bubbles, losing contact with everyday Americans. This explains why the political class, which makes up a large part of the elite, is confused by poll numbers showing that voters are economically stressed. The elite believe that everyone is thriving because they are doing well. I think most people probably don't want fundamental changes in public schools because their kids go to good private schools. They have no problem getting rid of SUVs. That's because Americans generally don't drive SUVs in big cities (if they even drive cars at all).

Crime, illegal immigration, inflation, fentanyl, and factory closures aren't keeping the elite up at night. Because in their cocoons, they don't encounter these problems on a daily basis like many Americans today. Not many Main Street Americans are losing sleep over climate change or LGBTQ issues.

America's elite tend to work in “speaking professions,” such as university professors, journalists, lawyers, actors, and lobbyists. They keep talking, but ordinary Americans are listening less than ever to them.
