Stop acting like the Alabama Supreme Court’s ruling was a shock

Once again we come to Alabama, a national cautionary tale.

The state is once again in the national spotlight for twisting the law to achieve favorable outcomes. Of course, this includes declaring the frozen embryo to be a child. But this isn't the first time we've gone down this path. Far from it.

Alabama sets the standard for twisted Supreme Court opinions, decisions, and legislative actions that have disenfranchised, degraded, terrorized, and vilified countless minorities for years. Indeed, we have managed to hold on to state constitutions and guiding language that recognize white supremacy.

So, this is our wheelhouse.

Sure, every 10 years it would be nice to adopt questionable laws and use court decisions and legislation to do some good. Feed some children. Please clothe the poor. Provide medical care to the poor. Realign the way school funding is allocated to maximize the benefits for poor children.

But no, definitely not. Until now.

It's always this…tough. It's always about using the creativity of the courts or blatantly ignoring basic tenets of the Constitution and making it into the worst possible version. And of course, we never use the red parts to justify everything using the Bible.

But perhaps even worse than this repeated embarrassment is the typical reaction from people across the state. This fake shock, this fake anger, this fake excuse that there's nothing we can do about it all.

Are these politicians amirite?

That's BS.

You are the problem. you. Citizens of voting age in this state. You are the cause of this.

To all of you who have ever gone into a voting booth and cast a straight ticket, especially on the Republican ticket. Everyone sitting at home on election day. Everyone looked happy and proud that they didn't know anything about politics. I can recite the intricate (and bogus) details of the Hunter Biden laptop scandal, but I can't help but remember that I attended (or watched online) school board meetings, city council meetings, and county commission meetings. all those who have never read a part of the law.

For those of you who know the names of the plays from last year's Iron Bowl finals, but don't know the names of the state and city government representatives.

you. teeth. . problem.

None of the people I mentioned who have done the shameful things have been placed in a position to do such things by blood, royal command, or divine intervention. they were elected. By voters.

Often they were elected by a small percentage of registered voters. A few years ago, state legislators in districts with populations of more than 40,000 were elected in special elections by about 3,500 voters. If more people in that area vote for that season's MLB All-Star, you can bet big.

In the last election in 2022, fewer than 40 percent of eligible voters cast a ballot. More than 60 percent were sitting at home. It's not a hassle to (in most cases) take 20 minutes to travel to your local polling place (or request an absentee ballot) and vote for someone who shares your interests and beliefs.

Perhaps even worse, about 60% of those who voted simply checked the straight ticket option at the top and walked away. Many of them had no idea who they were voting for or what their opinions were.

Well, what do you think? At least eight of the people you blindly voted for don't care about the Constitution or religious freedom at all. One of them, the Chief Justice, has never hidden his ridiculously religious approach to legal decisions. At the swearing-in ceremony he said:Indeed, the God of the Bible, the Creator, is the source of law, life, and freedom. ” And almost immediately spoke at an event sponsored by a radical Christian group, condemning abortion and homosexuality, denouncing both as sins.

Another judge ran a campaign ad depicting a little girl praying. Another had the entire church choir singing behind him. Another person filmed the ad on the steps of a church.

This is what you voted for. Or didn't vote for suspension. Or maybe they didn't care enough to even know who was running.

But now, when you or your friend's IVF treatment is under threat, you want to know how this happens? How could we be so stupid? Why didn't someone stop this? What can we do?

You can vote. You can care. You can pay attention.

Look, I'm not telling you to vote for one political party or one ideology. What I'm saying is, know the issues that are important to you, research the candidates, and vote for the candidate that most closely aligns with your opinions and beliefs.

But most importantly, get involved.

I think everyone is now seeing the consequences of not doing so.
