TUCSON, Arizona (KGUN) — The Sawarita Police Department responds to a student setting trash on fire.
The incident occurred around 10:30 am on April 11th at Sahuarita Middle School.
SPD received a report that a 13-year-old boy set fire to a trash can on school grounds.
According to the SPD, at 7:45 a.m. before the first school bell rang, students reported smoke coming from a cement bin near a tree outside the school building.
The school janitor was able to put out the fire before it got any bigger.
No injuries were reported, only a trash can was damaged.
Security footage has been reviewed and a witness and suspect have been identified.
Officers say the suspect set fire to a piece of paper, threw the paper in the trash and then left.
When the student was identified, school officials reported the incident to the police.
The SPD arrested the boy for arson on property, a class 5 felony.
The juvenile was booked at the Pima County Juvenile Court Center.
In January, the same suspect was arrested for setting fire to a piece of paper on a school bus.
In the incident, the suspect was arrested for disorderly conduct.
