Students’ career plans take flight at Wallace Community College Selma’s Aviation Day

With hopes of reaching higher, Wallace Community College Selma hosted more than 700 middle and high school students at Craig Field Airport on Thursday. The large gathering was part of Aviation Day, an event the college hosted in conjunction with the Department of Airports and Industry.

“WCCS Aviation Day is a testament to our commitment to inclusivity and opportunity for students of all backgrounds,” said Dr. James M. Mitchell, president of Wallace Community College-Selma. “We believe education can change lives, and this event marks another step toward a brighter future for aspiring aviators in our community.”

Students participated in flight simulations, toured aircraft exhibits, attended career workshops and networked with seasoned industry professionals. They also participated in drone demonstrations and had the opportunity to tour ALEA, Black Pilots of America and military aircraft.

“Aviation Day was designed to educate young people about the many life-changing career opportunities available in the aviation industry,” said James M. Corrigan, executive director of the Craig Airport and Industry Authority.

Highlights of the visit included students participating in an air traffic control simulation and a tour of Aeropro Corp. Students interacted with university and military representatives, and a STEM booth also offered hands-on activities.

Participating schools were: Lowndes County Middle School, Tipton Middle School, Martin Middle School, Calhoun High School, Central High School, Dallas County High School, Selma High School, Keith Middle/High School, Francis Marion High School, Southside High School, R.C. Hatch High School and Wilcox High School.
