The Mojave County Library District’s summer reading program is set to return to Lake Havasu next month, and county officials hope the program will give children an advantage when entering next year.
Summer reading programs have long been championed by parents and educators as a way to relieve children from the summer heat in the Havasu area and keep them interested in learning during the summer holidays. The theme for this year’s summer reading program is “All Together Now,” according to library officials this week, and will feature activities and events that highlight themes such as teamwork, friendship, community and mutual cooperation.
Last summer’s reading program was a remarkable success throughout the library district. And according to Mojave County Librarian Director Jake Barillaro, the borough is working to exceed that success this summer.
“Kids and parents love this program,” Barillaro said Wednesday. “This is one way to keep school-aged children occupied during summer vacation. I noticed that there is Students who stay engaged in reading and schoolwork during the summer are less likely to experience this. ”
This summer’s reading program includes activities for children from newborn to 18 years old, including ‘Baby Jamboree’ and ‘Storytime for Toddlers’; Includes teen activities for children ages 18-18. These activities include toddler literacy, art, poetry and games, with prizes awarded to Havasu’s voracious young readers.
“This program allows residents to participate in interesting programs and to challenge themselves to read even more during the summer,” Barillaro said. “Children who read a book during the summer vacation will be ahead of the curve when they return to school. Children who grow up with books in their homes often achieve higher educational levels than those who grow up in homes without books.”
The library’s summer reading program begins at 2:00 p.m. on June 2 in the community room of the Lake Havasu City Chapter. The event will feature Tempe’s professional clown Lovely Buttons.
