In a video posted online earlier this week, MSNBC's Joy Reid expressed surprise at Vice President Kamala Harris' choice of running mate, calling one of the front-runners a “Wonder Bread mayonnaise sandwich.”
In a TikTok post, Reid shared her thoughts on Harris' selection of Democratic Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her running mate in 2024 over other front-runners such as Arizona Sen. Mark Kelly. Reid said she believed Harris would choose Kelly, calling him the “most traditionally safe choice” and describing him as “super white.” (Related: Tim Walz administration led effort to eliminate most age requirements for genital surgery for children)
“Let me just give you my thoughts briefly. Honestly, this is a choice I didn't think she would make. As we understand it, the final list was narrowed down to three finalists, and I thought she would choose an astronaut. Realistically, he would have been the safest, most conventionally safe choice for me,” Reed said.
“White, super white, mayonnaise sandwich on white Wonder Bread. He comes from a border state and he could have been a strong advocate for his wife on how to handle the border. His wife, Gabby Giffords, is a very empathetic woman who was a victim of gun violence, so she was a big supporter of the issue,” Reid continued. “He has twins, so that would have been a cool story to tell. He's an astronaut. What's a cooler story than an astronaut? It would have been a cool story to tell at a convention, so I thought that was the easy way to go.”

Reid later called Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, a Democrat, Ms. Harris' “riskiest pick,” saying he would “anger a lot of groups within the party.”
“He would have angered so many groups, from educators who disagree with his position on vouchers, to environmentalists who are upset about his position in support of fracking, and of course pro-Palestinian protesters,” Reed said.
“I think Shapiro would have incurred the most ire because he would have brought the entire conversation back to Gaza and the campus protests,” Reid continued. “That would have been the focal point.”
Walz was announced on Tuesday as Harris' 2024 presidential running mate and has since drawn attention from Republicans for promoting far-left policies during his time as governor.
Governor Walz signed a bill in April 2023 granting Minnesota the right to make child custody decisions if access to gender reassignment surgery is denied, and in June 2022 he issued an executive order aimed at making the state a “safe haven” for abortions.
