Suspect dies in deputy-involved shooting after starting garage fire near Apache Junction

Apache Junction, Arizona (3TV/CBS 5) – A suspect was killed in a shooting involving a deputy near Apache Junction Tuesday afternoon.

After ramming a PCSO vehicle, the man returned to his home near Goldfield Road and Southern Avenue and barricaded himself indoors, agents said.

A Pinal area SWAT team was called to the rescue, and the suspect was seen armed with a knife and a handgun, according to PCSO. The man then started a fire in a single-family garage that spread to several nearby buildings, PCSO said. The PCSO said a shooting involving a deputy occurred during negotiations with the suspect, who died at the scene. Several homes were evacuated as a precaution.

The PCSO has asked lawmakers to avoid areas near Arcadia Road and Southern Avenue as lawmakers continue to investigate. A suspect has not been identified. It was the 11th law enforcement-involved shooting outside of Maricopa County and the 44th in Arizona overall.
