SAFFORD – A man was shot dead by police Sunday after he allegedly opened fire on a police officer. The male subject was identified as John Paul, his 51-year-old from Safford, Arizona.
According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety (AZDPS), officers from the Safford Police Department, agents from the Graham County Sheriff’s Office, and an AZDPS trooper “returned” shots at a man at Block 2300 of U.S. Route 191. : 34:00 pm
John died at the scene from injuries sustained after shooting a law enforcement officer. Police were initially dispatched to the area regarding a man with a weapon. According to the release, John allegedly fired his weapon at the officer, who then opened fire.
No law enforcement officers were injured.
The Arizona Department of Public Safety is investigating and will provide additional information as it becomes available.
The incident occurred in the Jensen Hill area of US Highway 191 just north of Discovery Park Boulevard.
The shooting closed U.S. Highway 191 from approximately 20th Street/Lonestar Road to Discovery Park Boulevard for about 12 hours.
