Suspect identified in Tucson officer-involved shooting

Tucson, Ariz. (13 News) – The Pima Regional Critical Incident Team (PRCIT) has released new information regarding a police-involved shooting incident on March 14.

TPSCD responded to a call regarding an armed robbery with a firearm at Block 2700 of East Grant Road. When officers arrived on the scene, they found the suspect inside a restaurant near the location of the first robbery.

As officers confronted the suspect, the sergeant gave him multiple orders to get down to the ground. The suspect refused and pointed his gun at the officer. The sergeant fired his rifle and retreated to cover.

Additional officers were dispatched to the scene from the TPD, SWAT teams and hostage negotiation units. Officers believed the suspect continued to pose threats to the community with reports about possible community members inside the restaurant.

During the investigation, officers learned that a community member had escaped from the restaurant unharmed. After numerous attempts to communicate with the suspect, SWAT officials entered the restaurant and identified the suspect with obvious signs of gunshot wounds.

The suspect, identified as 37-year-old Nicolas Mauro Sosa, died at the scene.

The officer who fired his weapon is Sergeant Jesse Klopowitz, a 14-year veteran with the Tucson Police Department.

Sosa had a criminal record in Pima County, according to the Arizona Department of Corrections.

In 2006, he was convicted of weapons misconduct and sentenced to two and a half years in prison. rice field.

Sosa was also convicted of several offenses while in custody. These violations include disorderly conduct, threats, fighting, refusal to work, disobeying orders, theft, and giving or receiving tattoos.
