A firefighter suffered an ear injury after a “suspicious” explosion at a homeless camp in Los Angeles, authorities said Tuesday.
A Los Angeles firefighter was injured last Monday in a fire involving both brush and man-made debris in the Sepulveda Basin. according to “Initially diagnosed as a half-acre grass fire, the flames, which reached heights of three to four feet, were later found to be burning in an encampment area within the Sepulveda Basin,” according to a news release. Firefighters immediately began aggressively fighting the blaze, despite the challenges of triple-digit temperatures.

“During the exchange, a blast from an explosion of unknown origin caused one firefighter from the first responding fire brigade to fall to the ground with a head injury,” the statement said. The firefighter reportedly lost a hearing in the accident. according to To ABC 7.
Ten other firefighters at the scene were taken by ambulance for medical attention. All injured firefighters have been released from the hospital and are currently recovering at home, the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) said in a statement. More than 200 firefighters responded to the incident. An LAFD water helicopter was deployed after the explosion to help extinguish the blaze. The fire was safely under control by Monday afternoon. As of Tuesday morning, an investigation was ongoing to determine the cause of the fire and the source of the explosion. Thirteen Los Angeles Fire Department units remain on scene, along with the Los Angeles Police Department, according to the release. No civilian injuries have been reported, and authorities continue to closely monitor the situation to prevent further incidents.
