ST. George — Fresh off its second consecutive meet win over Idaho last Saturday, the Utah Tech women's swim team received more good news this week.
new student Sera Mallory She was named the Western Athletic Conference Women's Swimmer of the Week for her notable performance in the Trail Blazers' win over the Vandals on Wednesday.
Mallory swam the second-fastest mile in program history (17:05.05 – sixth-fastest time in the WAC this season) en route to her first win of the day, then quickly turned around and won the 500 free. (5:08.98) ). Mallory also won the 4×400 free relay for the Trail Blazers, closing out the meet with her first leg in 53.37, according to a news release.
Utah Tech won nine of 12 individual races and dominated both relays, defeating the Vandals 155-104.
Even though it was Senior Day, the Blazers were led by four freshmen, all of whom won two events each.
Along with Mallory, Mary Sims-Cross won both the 100m (57.39) and 200m (2:06.25) backstroke, and Abigail Hill also won the 100m (57.27) and 200m butterfly. (2 minutes 05.75 seconds). Grace Benson also won two events in the 100-meter breaststroke (1:04.82) and 200-meter swim (2:09.02).
Senior Skylar Ryan was the first to touch the wall in the 200 chest (2:23.95) in her final home individual race for the win.
In relays, the Utah Tech “A” team of Eleonore Rembert, Lyon, senior Danyael Quison and junior Mandy Farnham swam their way to victory in the 200-meter medley relay (1:45.33) . In the final event of the meet, the team of Mallory, freshman Laney Devine, Rembert and Farnham easily won the 400 free relay (3:32.99).
Utah Tech will be back in action this weekend as the Trail Blazers travel to Flagstaff for a two-day WAC dual meet in Northern Arizona.
Tennis team hosts Utah State
Utah Tech University women's tennis team They return home for their home opener Saturday at noon, heading to Utah State.
The Aggies opened the season at home against Idaho State last weekend, losing 5-2 to Utah Tech in Logan.
The Trail Blazers opened the season last weekend in Salt Lake City against Utah and Montana State, losing in straight sets to the Utes and 6-1 to the Bobcats.
In singles, Utah Tech earned a point at No. 6 singles as freshman Kylie Kezos defeated Hudson Hawkins 6-4, 1-6, 11-9 in a third-set tiebreaker.
Track team catches fire in Flagstaff
Utah Tech University indoor track and field team Four program records were set Friday at the Northern Arizona Lumberjack Team Challenge held at the Walkup Skydome in Flagstaff.
Head coach Derrick Adkins said in a news release that he was “very pleased with the team's performance, highlighting the continued improvement and dedication shown by our players.” “It was a good weekend for the team. A week after setting the 400-meter record, freshman Whitney Christiansen placed sixth in the meet with a time of 58.20 seconds, nearly a second off her previous program record time of 59.16 seconds.
Junior Lashawna Gibson ran a time of 7.75 seconds in the 60-meter dash, shaving two-hundredths of a second off her program record. And freshman Cadance Sherwood set a new record in the 200 meters with a time of 25.72 seconds.
The Trail Blazers will return to action on February 2nd, returning to Northern Arizona for the Loneman Classic in Flagstaff.
