YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) – A small fire broke out at a Sidcol building, a hazardous waste facility near the Yuma Palms Mall.
The fire broke out around 8pm on Tuesday
On Wednesday afternoon, Sidkol issued a statement regarding the fire.
SYDCOL President Chuck Templer said in a statement:
“A small fire broke out at a Yuma County facility, but fortunately no one was injured. The fire did not contain any harmful substances and did not cause any environmental problems. This is a testament to the safety measures in place at our facility. The rural metro put out the fire brilliantly.
“SYDCOL has been operating in Yuma and Yuma County for over 18 years and this is the first fire at a waste consolidation operation. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation and occurred after the closure of the SYDCOL facility.
“It is worth noting that none of the waste that is consolidated for transport at SYDCOL’s Yuma County facility is combustible without another source of ignition.
“The fire occurred while SYDCOL was seeking a special use permit to expand its business. The request provoked serious and unsubstantiated accusations against the company and the men and women who run it. As a result, SYDCOL will be taking extra precautions to increase the security of the facility.
“We are grateful to the local city fire department for their prompt firefighting efforts, and we are waiting for an investigation into the cause of the fire.
“We are also very grateful that no firefighters, SYDCOL employees or others were injured.”
