YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) – SYDCOL Waste Management, a hazardous waste facility near the Yuma Palms Mall, is offering to fund an independent environmental study of the site in an effort to expand its services.
SYDCOL said the company and Yuma County will jointly select the companies to conduct the survey.
SYDCOL is seeking a special use permit to aggregate and transport hazardous waste out of Yuma County, with a vote scheduled for August 7.
But the company is now seeking a 90-day extension on the planned permit vote to give the Yuma County Oversight Board time to make an informed decision.
A special use permit has already been approved by the Yuma County Planning and Zoning Commission, but the community is addressing its concerns.
According to a press release, SYDCOL has offered to open its doors to independent environmental inspectors who would like to share their findings with Yuma County.
“We believe that independent environmental assessments confirm what we have been saying all along. Our facilities in Yuma County serve the community and safely transport hazardous waste from Yuma County. We want the opportunity to prove it, which is why we have proposed an open house, which opens the door for us to an independent environmental review. We believe elected leaders need to know the facts before making a final decision about SUP,” said SYDCOL owner Chuck Templar.
Once the 90-day postponement is approved by the oversight board, SYDCOL will host an open house for the public to tour the facility.
The open house will be held next Saturday from 9am to 11am.

SYDCOL is proposing to host a free hazardous household waste pick-up day for city and county residents to dispose of unused paint, thinner, motor oil and other items if a special use permit is approved. said.
SYDCOL said much of the liquid hazardous waste will be transported to the southeastern United States, where it will then be recycled into fuel used in cement production.
