Famed singer Sam Smith revealed the extremely gruesome and horrifying injury during his July 18 appearance on the “Sidetracked with Annie and Nick” podcast.
Starr revealed that his injuries were so severe that he was unable to walk for a month. Annie and Nick Smith tore his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in a skiing accident, which he says left him unable to walk because of the extreme pain he was in. He was photographed wearing the brace in New York City's SoHo district in January, and had to use a cane for a significant period of time.
The star player spoke about the circumstances that led to the injury and explained the complex impact it will have going forward.
“I fractured my ACL. I completely tore my ACL. I was skiing,” the 32-year-old star revealed to listeners.
“I was stupid and I tried Black Slope on the second day and I did pretty good. And she was like, 'You can do it,' and I tried and I couldn't,” the artist said.
“They dropped me off with like a blood bag. It was awful,” Smith continued.

Smith noted that despite receiving medical treatment, the injury is not one that the singer will be able to fully recover from.
“This is permanent,” the artist said on the podcast.
The star provided further details about his recovery process.
“It's between the bones and helps you jump and bounce, but it completely tore itself apart so I chose not to have surgery, but I couldn't walk on my leg for a month, it was terrible,” Smith recalled.
“It was the first time I'd ever been unable to move and I was putting a bit of weight on it so it was quite unsettling,” Smith said. (Related: “I could actually see her skull”: Howie Mandel describes the moment he found his wife lying in a pool of blood)
But there was an upside: Smith said it was a turning point in his artistic career, and he was able to use his time of recovery to his advantage.
“I used it as an excuse to calm myself down,” Smith asserted.
