Teacher pay rises, but not at pace with private sector

PHOENIX — Teacher salaries are rising in Arizona, but at least in Silicon Valley, they haven’t kept up with overall private sector salary growth.

According to a report released by the Arizona Comptroller General, the state’s district schools have 50,056 teachers serving more than 860,000 students. His average salary last school year was $58,366, a 21% increase over five years.

ABC15 analyzed the largest school districts in Maricopa County, employing over 100 teachers. These districts have a total of 31,060 teachers, of whom one in five she is considered a newcomer with less than three years of work experience. The median salary for a teacher in a large school district was $58,876. Most teachers are expected to be in charge of 17 to her 18 students. Her average teaching experience is 10.8 years.

Teacher salaries were among the highest in some of the county’s largest high school districts. The Glendale Union High School District tops the list with an average salary of $71,507. This was followed by Tolleson Union HSD with $70,191 and Phoenix Union HSD with teacher incomes of about $69,911.
