Teamsters Give Money to Republican Candidates While the President Claims Democrats Have Left Behind ‘Working People’

Republicans Gain Union Support from Teamsters President

Union support for Republicans is on the rise, led by Teamsters president Shawn O’Brien. This year alone, the Teamsters, along with the Democrats, Republicans, and the International Brotherhood of Independent Voters Education (DRIVE) PAC, have funneled nearly $70,000 into Republican campaigns. This marks the second consecutive election cycle where the Teamsters, historically aligned with the Democratic Party for about two decades, are backing Republican candidates.

According to Teamsters spokesman Kaladeniz, “Our members are workers who have interests that cross party lines.” He emphasized the importance of engaging with a variety of viewpoints. “Living in a bubble doesn’t add value. You need to converse with a range of people to really understand the situation,” he stated, referencing the DRIVE PAC’s donations reported by Politico.

The Teamsters’ political division has contributed $5,000 to the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) and various House Republican campaigns, totaling $62,000 allocated to 22 House Republicans, including some from New York.

O’Brien has been vocal in criticizing former President Biden for not engaging with the working class within the Democratic Party. He pointed out that despite Biden touting his administration as the “most pro-union” in history, many within the party feel disconnected from their communities. “Democrats have lost touch… They seem more enamored with money and big tech than with their actual constituents,” O’Brien remarked, highlighting a key issue for voters.

O’Brien also noted that the Democrats’ focus on social justice issues hasn’t resonated with Teamsters members as much as financial stability and job security. “Our members care more about having extra money in their pockets and better pensions,” he added.

During a recent speech at the Republican National Convention, O’Brien aimed to strengthen ties between the union and Republican candidates. Research from the union indicates that nearly 60% of its members preferred Trump over former Vice President Kamala Harris in the last presidential election.

Trump’s call for labor support during the 2024 election cycle saw significant backing from voters across various demographics, particularly from those earning less than $50,000 annually.

Republican strategists are keen on maintaining and expanding support from working-class voters, especially as Democratic groups pump substantial funds into recovering this important voting bloc. “As we advocate for these workers and their families, we’re seeing support for Republicans grow,” NRCC spokesman Mike Marinella said, pointing to the disillusionment many feel towards Democratic policies.

While the Teamsters continue to support Democratic candidates financially, DRIVE PAC has also made significant contributions, including $200,000 to the Democratic Bar Association and $100,000 to the Democratic Governor’s Association.

A request for comment from the Teamsters’ spokesman went unanswered.
