Teen hikers saved from sudden flood in Arizona

Officials in Yavapai County reported that two teenage girls stranded due to a flash flood were rescued safely.

CAMP VERDE, Ariz. — The two girls, both 19, were hiking when they found themselves in a sudden flash flood and had to climb up a canyon for safety.

According to the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office, “They were trying to find their way back to the trail but had limited water, and then communication was lost.”

The girls were last seen on Friday, October 10, after not returning from a camping trip near West Clear Creek, just outside Camp Verde. Law enforcement confirmed their vehicle remained at the trailhead, prompting the call for air support from DPS.

Initially, bad weather hampered helicopter flights, leading Yavapai deputies to organize a ground search for Saturday morning.

Deputies managed to make contact with the hikers through an emergency text at 9 a.m., officials shared.

A representative from Yavapai mentioned that it was “cold and wet, but they were okay,” and added that their location was communicated to the search and rescue teams.

The climbers were located around 10 a.m. Saturday, with a helicopter successfully transporting them back to their vehicles.

“As more rain is on the way, be cautious about the possibility of flash flooding in areas where you hike,” Yavapai County authorities advised.
