Tennessee National Guard to assist D.C. police force

Deployment of Tennessee National Guard Troops to D.C.

Tennessee Governor Bill Lee has authorized the dispatch of 160 members of the Tennessee State Guard to Washington, D.C. this week. This move comes in response to a request from President Donald Trump, aimed at assisting with law enforcement efforts in the capital.

According to spokesperson Elizabeth Johnson, the deployment is part of a “security mission” to support the District of Columbia National Guard. Tennessee is among several Republican-led states sending troops to Washington for this purpose. The security forces will engage in several activities including monument security, community safety patrols, protection of federal facilities, and traffic control.

This operation is funded and regulated at the federal level. Following President Trump’s order to activate 800 soldiers in D.C., around 1,000 National Guard troops from at least four other Republican governors have also been sent to the area.

Despite local officials arguing that crime rates have dropped by approximately 30%, Trump has insisted on a federal intervention for law enforcement in D.C. After a legal challenge from D.C. officials, the Trump administration backed the appointment of federal officials to lead the police department and provided support for the police chief. U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondy indicated a willingness to assist local police with immigration enforcement, even if it contradicted city laws.

Additionally, Governor Lee mentioned the possibility of providing logistical support for Tennessee’s immigration and customs enforcement officers to enhance deportation efforts.
