Tennessee targets late 2026 unveiling of Crockett statue

Tennessee will set up a bronze statue of legendary frontier man David Crockett in front of the state Capitol by fall 2026.

The estimated $1 million project will go through the design phase and face a state commission evaluation before it is built late next year, in time for the state’s next governor to be appointed in early 2027. She updated the State Construction Committee’s Executive Subcommittee on Monday to the schedule.

The Tennessee State Capitol Committee previously approved the Crockett statue project after the Edward Carmack statue along Martin Luther King Boulevard fell during the 2020 protest after George Floyd police were killed in Minneapolis.

The statue of Carmack, who died in a 1908 shootout with political rivals, was considered a martial artist for the banning movement at the time, when a former US Senator and newspaper executive clashed with civil rights activist Ida B. Wells in 1927.

Crockett’s bust already sits on the second floor of the state Capitol, demonstrating his importance in Tennessee history. He was born in the eastern part of the state and gained a reputation as a hunter, fighter jet and storyteller before serving in the state legislature and legislative assembly.

Crockett joined the Battle of Texas for independence from Mexico and died in 1836 at the Alamo.

Get the morning heading.
