Texas Zoo closed after leopard escapes from enclosure | Texas News | San Antonio

According to the Smithsonian’s National Institute for Zoo Conservation, clouded leopards have large canine teeth that enable them to take down prey such as small deer and wild boar.

The Dallas Zoo will be closed until further notice after management discovered a clouded leopard missing from its enclosure Friday morning.

Dallas Zoo officials issued a “Code Blue,” according to a tweet Friday morning. They also said in a message that the park would be closed to visitors “due to the serious circumstances.”

“One clouded leopard was not in range when the team arrived this morning and is currently missing,” a zoo official tweeted around 10am.

The Dallas Police Department is assisting in the search for a large cat that officials believe is hiding somewhere in the park, according to the tweet.

A Dallas Zoo official said, “Right now, our focus is on locating the animals.

Twitter users quickly made fun of the potentially dangerous situation, with some suggesting that authorities use red laser pointers to lure the leopards into their habitat.

Some were surprised that the Dallas Zoo described the jungle cat as a “non-dangerous animal.”

Clouded leopards are larger than domestic cats, but smaller than other large cats such as lions and cougars. According to the Smithsonian National Zoo & Conservation InstituteHowever, clouded leopards have long canine teeth that allow them to take down prey such as small deer and wild boars.
