‘That’s Sweet, They’re Illegal Aliens’: Heritage Foundation President Spars With MSNBC Hosts Over Illegal Immigration

Kevin Roberts, president of the Heritage Foundation, discussed the issue of a second Trump term and illegal immigration with MSNBC hosts on Saturday.

“The Weeknd's” co-host Simone Sanders Townsend said the Heritage Foundation “The Institutionalization of Trumpism” Proposed Project 2025a set of conservative policy proposals for running the federal government. Roberts denied a claim by former Biden-Harris senior adviser that the plan was “crafted specifically for another Trump administration,” saying the Heritage Foundation “cannot do that” because it is “not partisan.” Roberts said he would be thrilled if President Joe Biden “came to me with an explanation.”

Roberts was then asked about using the National Guard to carry out deportations, to which he replied, “Number one, we need to close the border,” before calling for “the largest mass deportation system in the history of the United States.”

“The fact that over 10 million illegal immigrants have come to this country is unjust, illegal and evil. We must deport these people. We must invite them back through our legal system. At Heritage, we love immigrants, but we also love the rule of law,” Roberts said. “So how do you plan to go about it?” Sanders Townsend asked. “Are you talking about going door-to-door? Because that's what the plan reads. But I…”

“First of all, there will be a lot of people leaving. And what's interesting, you know, is just by talking about this and starting to implement the plan — and President Trump deserves a lot of credit for talking about this — people are going to say, 'I don't want to take the risk of being arrested for illegal conduct.'”

Roberts added that he had a “great plan” to use the Department of Homeland Security, saying “even majorities on the political left are in favor” of mass deportations because of the “harm” caused by the border crisis.

Sanders-Townsend then appeared to ignore attempts by co-host and former Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele to end the show, saying, “Despite being told to end it, I'd like to take a couple more minutes.”

“I'll be here as long as you want me to,” Roberts said.

“So what are these people doing? What are they doing now?” Steele asked Roberts.

“Which people?” Roberts asked.

“Eleven million, 20 million, whoever they are, they want to deport,” Steele explained.

“A lot of them are committing crimes,” Roberts told Steele, referring to the suspected murder of 12-year-old Jocelyn Nungaray in Houston by two Venezuelan immigrants, whose body was discovered on Monday.

“So, it's one of 11 million,” Steele said. “What, what…”

“I could give you loads of examples for the rest of this segment,” Roberts replied, as Sanders-Townsend chimed in with statistics.

Ms Sanders-Townsend insisted she was “just giving numbers”, and Mr Roberts urged her to “tell that to the survivors of the people whose families were killed”.

“Unfortunately, what is the difference between illegal immigrants who engage in this behavior and those who don't?” Steele asked Roberts.

“We don't like that. Let me be clear. We don't use the word 'illegal.' We use the word illegal,” Sanders-Townsend interjected.

“That's cool. They're illegal immigrants,” Roberts said.

When Roberts asked Steele how many illegal immigrants are committing crimes in the United States, he said most illegal immigrants “are not even trying to become legal.” Sanders-Townsend accused Roberts of “weaponizing horrific murder to slander 11 million people,” before quickly shifting the topic to abortion.
