The American Cancer Society Awards $20,000 Transportation Grant to Kingman Regional Medical Center | The Buzz -The buzz in Bullhead City – Lake Havasu City – Kingman – Arizona – California

Kingman, Arizona, May 30, 2023 – The American Cancer Society recently awarded a $20,000 transportation grant to WL Nugent Cancer Center at KRMC.

For people with cancer, transportation problems can be a barrier to getting treatment. Many people need daily or weekly treatment, sometimes for months. Family and friends may be able to help, but they don’t always have the time or resources to provide every ride. This burden is even more pronounced for some patients who come from rural Mojave County for treatment.

“The lack of access to quality cancer care where people live contributes to disparities in cancer outcomes. It is important to provide adequate funding and programs,” said Dr. Arif Kamal, chief patient officer of the American Cancer Society.

This year’s award is the third transportation grant WL Nugent Cancer Center has received from the American Cancer Society. Last year, the grant provided his 2,268 rides to local patients undergoing cancer treatment.

Jaime Cook, MS/CM, case manager at WL Nugent Cancer Center, has led efforts to secure and renew funding each year. “It’s important that we do all we can to reduce the costs associated with treatment so that patients can continue to receive quality cancer care closer to home,” Cook said.

Using grant funds, WL Nugent Cancer Center partnered with Woody’s Chevron to provide gas coupons and gift cards. The cancer center will coordinate other arrangements for patients who do not have their own vehicle or who require medical transport.
