The Caring Foundation: Thirty years of supporting Alabama

Alabama Blue Cross and Blue Shield’s Commitment to Community

At the core of Alabama Blue Cross and Blue Shield’s mission is a commitment to giving back. They focus on enhancing health, happiness, and quality of life for individuals and families throughout the state.

The Caring Foundation (TCF), a charity linked with Alabama Blue Cross and Blue Shield, aims to boost the health and well-being of local communities. Established in 1990, TCF supports various initiatives centered on health education, access to care, and community development. Through strategic partnerships, grants, and outreach efforts, the foundation addresses significant health challenges while promoting healthy living for Alabamians of all ages.

Ashley Russell has worked as a gift specialist for the Compassionate Foundation for over five years, focusing on identifying and addressing the state’s most urgent needs. She manages the organization’s community initiatives, which involve reviewing grant applications and seeking new funding opportunities.

“For 35 years, we’ve aimed to support charities that enhance the quality of life for Alabamians through health and education efforts,” Russell explains. “Each year, we provide grants to all 67 counties in Alabama, with 784 grants anticipated in 2024, making our state a healthier place to live.”

In addition to her management role, Russell collaborates with her team to foster strong relationships with grantees and potential partners through site visits and discussions. While the organizations they work with may differ, they all share a common goal: to improve health and education in Alabama.

“A few highlights include the introduction of the Be Healthy School Grant program in 2012, aimed at funding schools that promote healthy activities for students,” she shares. “In 2016, we started funding medical scholarships for students, who must practice in rural Alabama communities for three years to help tackle healthcare access issues.”

TCF also funds various partnerships, such as one with the National Fitness Campaign to establish outdoor fitness courts in communities across Alabama.

Russell witnesses, firsthand, the positive changes these initiatives bring to the communities they serve. Many impactful stories emerge through outdoor experiences, one of Alabama’s vital health assets.

“We’ve heard countless stories of people enjoying the outdoors, exploring Alabama’s many trails or participating in field trips to state parks. Community members come together to engage in family health activities,” she notes.

One of Russell’s personal highlights involves her love for the arts. TCF actively supports multiple fine arts organizations in underprivileged areas. “I find joy in seeing children and adults uncover hidden talents, develop new interests, and bond over these activities,” she shares.

This year, the foundation initiated the Diamond Impact Awards, a new grant program designed to back innovative projects that can make a lasting difference in healthcare access. The response has been overwhelming, with nearly 100 letters of interest from various organizations statewide.

If you’re interested in applying for a grant, Russell advises submitting your application at least 60 days before your event or project begins. They allow one request per year, but applications for corporate donations and sponsorships are also accepted.

TCF emphasizes the importance of building relationships. If it’s been a while since you’ve contacted them—or if this is your first application—it’s encouraged to reach out. They’re eager to hear about your organization and its impact.

Collaboration is vital to TCF’s values. They appreciate organizations that work together towards common goals and encourage sharing connections and partnerships in grant applications.
