The Facts Show: Trump’s Efforts in DC Are Effective

A review of data from the Metropolitan Police Department suggests that President Donald Trump’s efforts to address crime in Washington, DC, have led to notable improvements in public safety.

Trump initiated his strategy on August 7, launching the DC Safe and Beautiful Task Force. A few days later, on August 11, he designated the DC police as federal and brought in the National Guard for support.

A comparison of crime statistics from the same periods in 2023 and 2024 showed a sharp decline in total crimes from August 11 to August 25. Specifically, crime was reported to be 21% lower compared to 2024 and a significant 33% lower than in 2023.

Violent crime statistics also reflected a marked change, showing a 52% drop compared to 2024 and a staggering 71% decrease from 2023. This included various categories such as murder, carjacking, robbery, and property crimes.

Some critics argue that crime rates in DC were already on the decline before Trump’s intervention. However, comparisons of statistics from 2023 against those from August 25, 2024, and 2025 indicate a sharper decrease in many categories following Trump’s crackdown.

For instance, the number of carjackings dropped from 35% between 2023 and 2024 to an impressive 96% in 2025. Similarly, robberies decreased by 46% from 2023 to 2024 and by 68% in 2025.

Looking specifically at carjackings, there were 26 reported in the two weeks of 2023 compared to 40 in 2024. After Trump’s measures took effect, the count fell to just one.

Robbery statistics showed 28 incidents during Trump’s initial period in DC compared to 88 in 2024 and 163 in 2023.

Since August 11, the Metropolitan Police recorded 67 violent crimes, a notable reduction from 139 in the same timeframe last year, and almost half of the number from 2023.

During the period, there were two homicides. This contrasts with six in 2024 and ten in 2023, although a few cases were excluded from this latest data due to timing.

In terms of dangerous weapon-related incidents, while the decline from 2023 to 2024 was initially greater, the overall trend continued downward, with a 20% drop from 2024 to 2025. Theft incidents saw a smaller decrease of 5% from the previous year to Trump’s operation start.

Since launching this initiative, over 1,170 arrests have been made, with many of those arrested identified as illegal immigrants with other criminal backgrounds. Additionally, officials reported the apprehension of eight gang members and the recovery of four missing children.

DC Mayor Muriel Bowser expressed gratitude at a recent press conference regarding Trump’s support for crime reduction efforts, noting that decreased incidents of carjacking and gun violence contribute to a greater sense of safety in neighborhoods.

In a recent statement, Trump hinted that he may expand his focus on crime prevention to other cities, including Chicago, where he expressed frustration with local leadership. He stated that there seems to be a public demand for help in addressing crime there.
