Arizona historian Bill Harrison presents “The Harvey Girls” at Apache Junction on Monday, March 13 at 7 p.m. as part of the Arizona Lecture Series.
Lectures will be held at the Performing Arts Center at Apache Junction High School, 2525 S. Ironwood Road. Doors open at 6 p.m. Tickets are $5 per person.
According to the release, “The great Southwest changed forever when Fred Harvey created a new type of waitress called The Harvey Girls. They appeared one after another.”
“[Harvey]had an epiphany and decided to hire attractive young women, between the ages of 18 and 30, of moral character, integrity and integrity, to work in his restaurant. I worked hard, but also paid well and had unprecedented fun.Independence,” the release said.
As a bonus, there is a discussion of the 1946 film The Harvey Girls starring Judy Garland and Angela Lansbury.
The lecture series will end on March 27th. The rest of the program includes “They Beat the Heat” by Christine Reid on March 20th and “Hopalong Cassidy” by Bill Harrison on March 27th.
