Grand Canyon North Rim, Arizona
The cherished sculpture from the Grand Canyon Lodge, which many thought was lost forever in the Dragon Bravo Fire, is now safe and on the move.
As reported by the Grand Canyon National Park Service, Brightzavalo has partially survived the intense wildfire. Photos featuring the sculpture have been captured by the crew.
The NPS mentioned that preparations are underway for his journey to the South Rim, where the Agency Museum Collection is located. Experts will evaluate his condition to determine if he can be restored to his former state or if a new version will replace him at the Grand Canyon Lodge.
Nearly a month ago, the Grand Canyon Historical Society shared images on Facebook suggesting that something bright had been heavily damaged in the fire.
Bronzeboro, dedicated to the real-life donkeys that roamed the Grand Canyon in the early 1900s, has stood in the lodge for over five decades. Hikers often rub his nose before embarking on their trails.
It’s still unclear when a decision regarding the sculpture’s fate will be made. “One thing is certain, Brighty’s legacy as a North Rim icon will continue to endure,” a park official said.
