Life-threatening storms hit Southern California starting Sunday and lasting for several days
Superstorm hits California: Danger zones, forecasts, warnings
'Pineapple Express' expected to hit Southern California on Sunday
Forecasters say a second storm, driven by an atmospheric river, will hit California next week and bring about twice the amount of rain that will fall in Los Angeles and surrounding areas on Thursday.
These are some of the headlines we've faced recently about weather that most people around the world consider a normal part of life, but for those in Southern California it's a strange phenomenon. We’re so used to “75 degrees and sunny” that when we actually have to drive in the rain; It is a psychological experience for many people. It seems like the media these days has nothing to do except scare people.
I have recently been aware of this development following mass evacuations in areas hit by hurricanes.I wrote it before When it comes to fear tactics, elected officials have started taking advantage of surrounding weather phenomena after the governor received significant backlash over deaths in the state.
Journalism students currently run our publication A new term has taken hold: “atmospheric river.” That's the new cool term for storm. It was developed in 1994 by several researchers at MIT. This term describes the phenomenon's characteristic of concentrated water vapor transport in narrow bands, similar to how rivers carry water over land. This phenomenon The word “storm” has been around forever, but it was developed to refer to what we used to know as “storm.” When the storm rolled around, it became a severe atmospheric river or a huge atmospheric river. It's an “in” term meant to scare readers.
Let me be clear: the loss of life from these events should not be underestimated. But the hysteria is starting to escalate to the point where people shrug their shoulders.
Immediately, Gov. Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency and withdrew federal funds to make it look like he cared. He ignores the daily emergency he and his party have created in a once-glorious state.
The biggest problem is national (or should I say international) delirium over rising heat-related deaths (you know, climate change). I would like to mention that he is an internationally renowned climate scientist and former director of the Danish Government Institute for Environmental Assessment in Copenhagen. Bjorn Lomborg has repeatedly debunked this, but It shows how many more people die in cold weather than in hot weather.
What brought me complete clarity was reading Isaac Larson's The Storm of Isaac. If you haven't read any of Mr. Larson's books, they are all enjoyable and he is an outstanding writer. this is, The hurricane that destroyed Galveston, Texas in 1900. It was probably the deadliest hurricane in history.
Larson makes two important points in his prelude to the actual events. He describes the development of his 1880s U.S. Weather Bureau, which was formally launched in 1890. It is now known as the National Weather Service (NWS). When told that this is the hottest year in any long period of time (selected by journalism students), be it 300, 1,000, or 100,000 years, the NWS start date is based on how long the actual record is. provides some perspective as to how long it lasted. Maintained. And how accurate do you think they were in 1882?
Larson then listed weather events that killed large numbers of people.
A cyclone in Calcutta in 1864 killed 40,000 people. In 1876, more than 100,000 people died in Bakkargunj. In 1780, a series of hurricanes in the Caribbean killed 22,000 people. In 2023, a Category 5 hurricane crossed Florida, sending the nation into a frenzy. Despite repeated searches, we were unable to find a single death that was directly caused by the hurricane.
It was 11pm on a Saturday night, and my beautiful wife and I had just finished watching an episode of The Sopranos (yes, we decided to watch it for the third time on the 25th anniversary and we loved it). I received a phone call from my beloved daughter. She had just received an email telling her to evacuate her condo in Toluca Lake in preparation for her mandatory evacuation to begin at 8 a.m. She was asking us for advice.
We gave her some advice, but neither of us had ever evacuated for any reason, let alone a weather event. I went to bed at 1am and woke up at 7am. DD never called for help. I looked out the front window of the house. The streets were completely dry. It was still dry at 10am. DD, as she was called, was still dozing off.
It is unfortunate and sad that there are serious weather events that put people at risk and sometimes people die from the effects. But that's life. And we should be grateful for how much better our lives are today compared to 200, 300, 500 years ago, when the world's population was much smaller and more people died.
It rained a lot and some people suffered damage. Nine people have died so far, and the giant pineapple express, a gigantic superatmospheric river, is believed to be the cause. That's 1 in 4.33 million Californians. Sadly, During the same period, many more Californians died from drug overdoses.
Californians were told last year that their tax returns could be delayed due to several days of rain. How long will it be before the postponement kicks in in 2024? Personally, I believe our leaders are a bunch of wimps; They are trying to turn us into a bunch of weaklings. I will not participate in the wimpy train. Just do the normal common sense things to stay safe.
