The Sad Lesson Afghanistan Holds For American Politics

Joe Biden's disastrous Afghanistan withdrawal is back in the news as it approaches its third anniversary.

For the mainstream media, this is just a pretext for a new propaganda attack against Donald Trump, who visited Arlington National Cemetery. Republicans have also been in the news this week for issuing a subpoena to Secretary of State Antony Blinken for his involvement in the disaster. Both moves are pure political posturing that will likely be forgotten within a few days.

The sad lesson of Afghanistan is that only one thing moves American politics: the tragic death of an American soldier.

Biden is on relatively stable ground. Approval rating His approval ratings were down 10 to 12 points for the first nine months of his presidency. But after Afghanistan, everything changed. The approval ratings suddenly reversed, and Biden has been down 10 to 12 points since then.

Three years after 13 Americans died at Abbey Gate, the president has been riddled with scandals: inflation has soared, riots have erupted, his family's influence tactics have come to light, he's cracked down on free speech and political opponents, and he's given Chinese spy balloons a thumbs-up. And yet nothing has made the situation any better.

By now it should be clear that the failed Afghanistan disaster was the inevitable result of Democratic fantasy policies and incompetent leadership. But Americans will not be moved until they see it happen. How many more disasters like Afghanistan must happen before Americans finally learn their lesson?
