The sunniest place on Earth is actually in Arizona

The World Meteorological Organization notes that although Yuma is the sunniest place on Earth, it is not the hottest place on Earth.

PHOENIX — In Yuma, Arizona, the sun shines 91% of the year's sunshine hours.

This means approximately 4,055 hours of sunlight per year and up to 4,456 hours of sunlight are possible. According to the World Record Academy, Yuma receives a total of 11 hours of sunshine in the winter and up to 13 hours in the summer, setting the world record for being the “Sunniest Place in the World.”

The World Meteorological Organization notes that although Yuma is the sunniest place on Earth, it is not the hottest place on Earth.

That honor goes to Furnace Creek in Death Valley, California. The hottest temperature of 134 degrees was recorded on July 10, 1913. During the summer, his daily high temperature in Death Valley averages 113 degrees.

Average daytime high temperatures in Yuma are approximately 107 degrees in the summer and 76 degrees from November to February.

Additionally, the city receives only about 3 inches of rainfall per year. Yuma's climate makes the region an agricultural powerhouse, growing more than 175 different crops, the largest of which is lettuce.

About 90 percent of the leafy greens grown in the United States from November to March are produced thanks to Yuma's abundant sun.
